Chrys Grummert - Wimberley, TX

Since graduating with his Masters from Otis College of Art and Design in 1996, Chrys Grummert has been focused on abstract painting. These selections mainly sample his current works as many of his earlier pieces were destroyed in an LA studio fire. He now resides in the artist community of Wimberley, TX, just outside of Austin. For a sampling of his local projects, visit the Public Works page.

Linear Layers Project, 2014

In this series, Chrys has focused on a process of making as the structure in which he explores his love of color in a painterly fashion. Layers of color are laid down, one on top of the other, each ending just shy of the edge of the layer underneath. Several paintings are created consecutively, visually connecting each with the one before and the one after through the order of color. They are all at once delightfully colorful, optical, reductive and casual.

Neo Geo Landscape Series, 2010-2013

This work explores abstraction that intentionally references Popular Culture. Neo Geo are landscapes that reference cartoon background, Product Design, Interior Design, and Science Fiction among others through the use of self-conscious color palettes and Danish modern curves - all in a variety of hand from clunky to hard-edge. The work revels in ideas of 'mistakes' as a way to champion the everyday, the human.

Paint By Number 2010

The Paint by Number series came from a desire to move away from his usual, heavily-layered, abstract work. Designing Paint by Number abstractions became an interesting concept. The pieces were created by taking photos of household items which were then manipulated with a photo editor. The digital work was transferred onto panels and the lines filled with vintage Paint by Number color palettes. Landscapes were later introduced to future works.
